3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best version available, 6 Jun 2002
By Papageno "Limpet" (Devon,South West, England) - See all my reviews
By the time of 1973, the D'Oyly Carte company had begun to show signs of decline. The freshness of productions had lost some of the former lustre and many of the established stars of the company, such as John Reed and Kenneth Sandford were less able to capture the essense of their earlier charisma. Lyndsie Holland as Katisha fairly shouts and screeches in the role, while the title performer could not match the brilliance of characterisation of the former, now late-lamented bass Donald Adams, not to mention the stalwart of the company from 1921-53, Darrell Fancourt. The plus side of the recording is the direction by Royston Nash. He at least breathes new life to the score in an otherwise often stale recording history of this particular Savoy Opera. Look out for the soon to be released 1957 recording and even the 1950 rendition by D'Oyly Carte. Failing that, why not purchase the superb version on Telemarc of the Welsh National Opera series of recordings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive., 17 May 2000
By A Customer
This is an impressive performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's well-known opera. The cast manages to capture all the verve of the opera and the contrast between the themes of death and the cheerful music.

In one or two places, such as the presto section in 'I am so proud, if I'm allowed' in Act One, it seems that the soloists are slightly out of time with the orchestra, but this is only very passing.

Overall, this recording is definitely worth hearing.

1.0 out of 5 stars oh dear..., 22 May 2009
By Richard di Calatrava (Dorchester, Dorset, UK) - See all my reviews
What a pity - just go back to the incomparable 1926 recording conducted by Harry Norris to find out what's missing here!
